6 Overlooked Bedroom Design Elements Designers Don't Want You to Forget About

Interior designers see countless bedrooms in their line of work, and as a result, they're easily able to pinpoint some of the most commonly overlooked elements that people forget to touch on in their sleep spaces.

Here, three professional designers speak in depth about six features that deserve a little more attention in the bedroom in order to ensure such a space is fully functional and complete-looking.

01 Lighting Layers

Designers will immediately notice when a bedroom does not have a layered lighting scheme, something that they believe is incredibly important to include.

"People think overhead lighting or bedside lamps are enough, but lighting layers are key—ambient, task, and accent," Amy Switzer, the founder of Amy Switzer Design, says. "Without them, the room can feel flat or overly functional."

There are many routes one can take in order to creatively weave additional layers of lighting into their sleep space. For example, Switzer shares, this may involve installing sconces, placing a floor lamp in the corner of the space, or even adding LED strips under the bed.

02 Window Treatments

Switzer finds that many people do not put much thought into the window treatments that they install in their bedroom.

"People either slap up basic curtains or skip them altogether," she says.

That said, the best approach in her eyes is to go with a layered window treatment—these, she says, add texture, warmth, and practicality.

One example the designer cites is opting for blackout shades with sheers over them, which combines functionality and aesthetics wonderfully. In this bedroom, simple Roman shades look right at home, and their patterned design adds a touch of whimsy to the otherwise simple color scheme.

03 The Foot of the Bed

It's common for there to be just empty space at the foot of your bed. However, Switzer explains that there are many opportunities to dress up the foot of the bed in order to make a space both more functional and stylish. This tactic can be implemented in both children's and adults' sleep spaces alike.

"Adding a bench, vintage trunk, or even a low bookcase makes the room feel more complete," Switzer says. "It gives visual balance and adds function, like a spot to toss that throw or sit while putting on shoes."

A bench that opens up to provide storage can also come in handy, particularly in small spaces, and can be used to house everything from spare bedding to off-season clothing to shoes.

04 Art

If your sleep space contains blank walls, it's time to get to work and add some character to them. After all, no bedroom is complete without art, Elle Cole, the founder of Elle Cole Interiors, explains.

"Exceptional, meaningful art—chosen not as an afterthought, but as an intentional emotional anchor for the space—has the power to transform a room from functional to soulful," she says. "What hangs on your bedroom walls can shape how you feel at the beginning and end of every day."

The art you choose for your space can range from a beautiful landscape to a funky abstract, the designer adds, making it easy for everyone to find something that suits their personality.

05 Nightstands With Storage

No bedroom is complete without bedside tables, but your nightstand is most effective when it contains some type of storage in addition to its top surface, Kelsey Haywood, the founder of Haywoodmade Interiors, says.

Haywood explains how storage is incredibly important, especially in a bedroom, because it prevents the top of a nightstand from feeling cluttered and adds to the tranquility of a bedroom.

The good news is that there are so many different nightstand styles on the market, ranging from traditional to contemporary, that it is easy to track down a piece that offers ample storage yet complements your design style.

06 Layered Bedding

Bring a hotel-like look into your sleep space with layered bedding that will make you feel extra cozy, no matter the time of year.

"We always do a duvet with cover to match accent pillows, then a textured throw or quilt at the base of the bed," Haywood says.

Don't be afraid to artfully mix colors and patterns to liven up your space as you select your bedding, as seen in the eclectic bedroom here.
